Geumsansa, the Maitreya Monastery
History of Its Foundation
Geumsansa was founded in 599 (1st year of Baekje’s King Beop’s reign) as a temple to pray for the well-being of the royal family. During the Unified Silla era, State Preceptor Uijeok spread the teachings of Consciousness-Only from here. His successor, Vinaya Master Jinpyo, oversaw the completion of Geumsansa’s Maitreya Hall in 766, raising the stature of Geumsansa as the central temple of Maitreya faith.
In 900, King Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje invigorated the Geumsansa area when he moved the capital from Gwangju to Jeonju, and the Gyeon Hwon Stone Gate (Gaehwamun) built at that time still stands today. In addition, records state that King Gyeon Hwon was imprisoned in Geumsansa Temple by his son Sin-geom in 935.
In 1079, Royal Preceptor Hyedeok (aka. Sohyeon) reorganized Geumsansa by establishing three separate compounds (Daesa-gu, Bongcheonwon-gu, and Gwanggyowon-gu), and built a large temple with 88 halls measuring 711 bays. During the Goryeo era, Geumsansa was the central temple of the Beopsang Order’s Consciousness-Only school.
During the Joseon era, Geumsansa represented Buddhism in the southwestern area of the Korean Peninsula. When the 1st Japanese invasion occurred in 1592, Great Master Noemuk Cheoyeong organized and led a 1,000-monk militia at Geumsansa Temple. In 1635, Great Master Sumun restored Daejeokgwangjeon Hall, Mireukjeon Hall, and Daejangjeon Hall, all of which had been burned down during the 2nd Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1597.
In 1725, the Hwaeom Great Dharma Assembly held by Great Master Hwanseong Ji-an attracted over 1,400 monks, nuns and devotees, elevating its status as the chief temple of Joseon Buddhism.
After Korea’s liberation, Geumsansa regained its status as the head temple of the 17th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Great Lineage Master Taegong Wolju presided over the “Socialization Movement of Enlightenment” at Geumsansa and raised its status as a temple leading the social outreach mission of Buddhism.
